Pesticides: Advertisements by chemical and “lawn care” companies assure us that their products will bring us “back to nature,” when in fact, they destroy nature. Many communities across the country have banned the use of lawn pesticides, based on research that strongly suggests that they are hazardous to humans, animals and the eco-system. In most neighborhoods, a day rarely goes by that several people aren’t spraying chemicals on their lawns or bushes, allowing “chemical drift” to poison adjoining properties. Over the past few decades, lawn care companies have subtly implied that a weedless lawn is a sign of status. But, little or no attention is paid to the vast amount of damage to the ground water and the eco-system in general. They have also forced people to become dependent upon their products, because natural predators of insect life have either been killed or driven away for lack of food. On a futher note, chemical companies are required by law to list only their active ingredients and not inert ingredients which some consider as dangerous as those listed. Stop the unnecessary use of pesticides! www.cqs.com

Okay I could lie in this gorgeous field for a couple of hours right now… I would even brave the pesticides, if indeed there are any. Dandelions are highly underrated… I think they have a bad rep because of their name… they should be renamed “Golden Sunrises” Then they would make everyone smile! TY – Rob

The yellow blossoms are also very beautiful. And that’s real nature … so killing nature to get back to nature is making no real sense.

@DelisaProductions If I had my way, I wouldn’t even have a “lawn”, I’d have a meadow. Unfortunately, my neighbors aren’t the meadow type

Pictures speak a thousand words, powerful message Marc and beautifully told. I for one have never used pesticides, our lawn is a mess BUT it’s a small sacrifice.

We are on the same wave here, Marc. I wish more could be done to stop all the unnecessary chemicals, not only on the earth but in our food!

@Perroquet51 (Part 2 for Moosie) My concern is not just to birds, but to the soil, itself, and everything in it. Since Im not sure that any of the birds you listed are insect eaters, they might be so effected as the smaller ones. Pesticide use is a very difficult one to control and I dont know how communities can do it without banning them, altogether. Either bugs get out of control or pesticide applications do. Neither alternative is acceptable.

@anmoose Moosie, thanks for the perspective. I have a house in Vero Beach, so I understand the need for pesticides, at times. My complaint is the overuse of them. Anyone can buy sprayers to spray their own bushes or yards. I also understand that the pros have to be licensed and I don’t doubt that the requirements are tough. However, that doesn’t mean that those requirements are followed by everyone. For example, sprays should not be used on windy days. Nevertheless, I have seen it being done.

PS – Just to balance the picture, I’m by nature a diehard organic gardener. No chemicals have touched my own lawn or garden in at least 20 years. My lawn looks it, too. LOL

Sandhill Cranes as regular winter residents, and I had lakes with thriving fish, frog, and critter populations to balance the food chain.
I worked VERY closely with Audubon International to learn how to do it, and I got pretty good at it. And I used pesticides. In Florida, you can’t NOT, or you won’t have turf.

it was on my back to maintain 120 acres of manicured turf for idiots to abuse chasing a ball around. I still have my commercial pesticide applicator’s license. It was a bitch getting it, and you have to stay on top to keep it current. The requirements are monstrous, and your usage is actually monitored by local, state, and federal agencies.
I had a pair of Bald Eagles who nested on the property, I had resident Mallards, Coots, Egrets, Cormorants, Canadian Geese and -still more-

This is a very complex subject. I absolutely agree that pesticides are grossly abused (primarily by overzealous and stupid consumers), yet at the same time, under proper control, they give us a degree of control that we must have, to provide food for this overweight, decadent society of ours, and to create a needed balance with nature, and they can do it *without* harm to our ecology.
I ran a golf course until I swore off working a couple of years ago, and as superintendent, -cont’d-
